Denver, Colorado – The feature film based on Marcus Luttrell's New York Times bestselling book Lone Survivor is moving closer toward production as Director Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Hancock, etc.) wraps up his current movie project. Luttrell, co-host of Beretta's Wild and Raw produced by Orion Multimedia, the world's largest producer of outdoor adventure programming, has been playing an active role in the development of the project to ensure that it pays appropriate tribute to the men honored in his book.
"I originally wrote the book so I wouldn't have to continue to re-tell the details of Operation Redwing and my SEAL team on that fateful mission as well as to honor and never let anyone forget about the bravery and heroism of my fallen brothers in Afghanistan. I never expected it to become a New York Times best-seller or to have Universal Pictures option the rights to make a movie of it," Luttrell said. "I helped choose director Peter Berg over many other big name directors, because he gave his word to me to faithfully and accurately recount the details of the book, without any Hollywood hype. He promised to 'do the book justice' and I am looking forward to getting the project underway."
With the goal of supporting American wounded warriors and their families, Luttrell launched the Lone Survivor Foundation in July 2010 at a kickoff party at Minute Maid ballpark, home of the Houston Astros. Inspired by his mantra "Never Quit", the lost heroes of Operation Redwing and the motivation to pay it forward, the Lone Survivor Foundation welcomes home, empowers and restores wounded warriors and their families.
"With the ongoing Global War on Terror, the Department of Defense casualty statistics report more than 37,000 soldiers wounded in combat since September 2001," Luttrell's foundation reports. "This number accounts for the visible wounds only and DOES NOT take into account the increasing number of invisible wounds ranging from mild to moderate brain injury and post combat stress that is increasing in our warrior and veteran population. Additionally, there are over 5,400 surviving families of fallen soldiers leaving spouses, parents and siblings that MUST be supported."
While Luttrell became renowned for his harrowing story about that ill-fated mission in the heart of Afghanistan, his love of the outdoors has been a part of his entire life. In Beretta's Wild and Raw on The Outdoor Channel, Luttrell's hunting skills and techniques are contrasted with eight-time National Sporting Clay Champion, Scott Robinson. In season two the just wrapped up, the dynamic duo and their friends hunt sandhill cranes in Texas, Cape buffalo in Africa, alligators in Florida and red stag in New Zealand–with plenty of interesting stops in between.
Marcus Luttrell is one of the "Stars of Orion" and his more detailed biography, along with those of the other hosts of Orion television series, can be found at www.thestarsoforion.com.
